How to Dry Your Dog Properly After Rain

Koiran kuivaaminen sateen jälkeen – näin teet sen oikein

In autumn, the same moment often repeats itself after a walk: your dog steps through the door, coat dripping, gives one good shake — and the hallway is suddenly covered in small puddles.

Drying your dog after rain is a small everyday routine, but it matters for your dog's comfort too. When the coat and skin stay damp for too long, areas that trap moisture easily — paws, skin folds, and similar spots — can become irritated. Careful drying helps keep your dog comfortable and the skin dry. The good news is that it doesn't take a complicated routine. A few minutes is enough, as long as you do things in the right order.

Start with a towel — gently

After a walk, let your dog shake off the biggest drops in the bathroom first, then reach for a towel. There's no need to rub a wet coat dry, and it's better not to. Instead, press gently against the coat and let the moisture soak into the towel. This works especially well for dogs with long or easily tangled coats. Gentle drying reduces unnecessary friction and helps keep the coat looking tidy.

A bathrobe makes drying so much easier

Once most of the water has been removed with a towel, a dog bathrobe becomes one of the most useful tools for rainy walks. It's easy to put on, and it stays in place whether your dog is moving around or settling down to rest. It gradually absorbs moisture from the coat and helps keep your dog warm while drying — without you having to keep drying them over and over. Usually, about 15–30 minutes is enough for the coat to be only lightly damp. Drying time naturally depends on your dog's size, coat thickness, and how wet they got on the walk.

Don't forget the paws, ears, and belly

The coat may feel dry on the surface even when moisture is still lingering in spots a towel doesn't reach as easily. Pay particular attention to the paws, belly, and around the ears. The corner of a towel works well for these smaller areas, absorbing extra moisture without needing to rub hard. If the paws are dirty from the walk, wash them gently with lukewarm water and dry them carefully afterward. Especially during muddy autumn weather, this small habit helps keep paws clean and reduces the dirt that ends up in your home. Drying the paws is a habit particularly worth keeping through autumn and winter, when the ground outside is wet and muddy.

Finish with a light brush once the coat is dry

Once your dog's coat has properly dried, a quick brush completes the routine. It helps open up the coat, prevents new mats from forming, and restores the coat's natural volume. It's also a nice, calm moment together after a walk. If your dog's coat mats easily, brush according to the coat's needs and quality. We've also written a separate guide on how to brush your dog's coat properly.

In the end, a good drying routine is exactly what the best everyday routines should be: simple, gentle, and easy to repeat. When a towel and a bathrobe are already waiting by the door after a walk, the next autumn rain doesn't feel quite like such a big project anymore.
