Merino Wool vs. Acrylic: Why Material Matters in a Dog Sweater

Merinovilla vs. akryyli: miksi materiaali ratkaisee koiran neuleessa

Two sweaters can look almost identical at first glance and yet feel very different when worn. One of the most important differences lies in the material. That is why we have chosen pure merino wool for our dog sweaters — and the reasons lie in the fibre itself.

Warmth and moisture

Merino wool is naturally breathable, helping to keep your dog warm in cold weather without trapping excess heat when your dog is active or moves indoors. Wool responds naturally to changing conditions, helping to maintain a comfortable temperature.

Acrylic, as a synthetic fibre, does not regulate heat and moisture in the same way. This difference becomes particularly noticeable when conditions change throughout the day.

The contrast is even clearer when it comes to moisture. Wool can absorb a significant amount of moisture without immediately feeling wet, while acrylic absorbs very little. Instead, moisture tends to remain on the surface of the fibre, which can leave the sweater feeling cold and damp.

On an autumn walk, the difference quickly becomes noticeable.

Softness and durability

The fine fibres of merino wool make it soft and comfortable against your dog’s coat and skin. As a natural fibre, wool also tends to generate less static electricity than synthetic fibres such as acrylic. This is particularly beneficial in a dog sweater, as less static and friction can help keep the coat smoother and reduce tangling underneath the sweater.

Wool also naturally helps inhibit the growth of bacteria, allowing the sweater to stay fresh for longer. Acrylic can feel equally soft when new, but the materials differ in how they age with wear. A high-quality merino wool sweater, when cared for properly, can retain its feel, appearance and performance season after season.

Where our wool comes from

The yarn we use is Woolmark-certified, and the wool comes from Australian farms producing mulesing-free wool with high standards of animal welfare.

Our dog sweaters are made in Siikainen, Finland, and have been awarded both the Design from Finland mark and the Key Flag Symbol.

A carefully chosen material feels comfortable on your dog and retains its natural properties year after year.
