How to Choose the Right Size Dog Sweater
A well-fitting dog sweater should feel comfortable, allow your dog to move freely and stay in place during walks. Finding the right size, however, isn’t always as simple as choosing based on weight or breed, as even dogs of the same breed can have very different proportions.
That’s why it’s always worth measuring your dog before ordering a sweater. All you need is a measuring tape and a few minutes.
Three important measurements
Chest circumference is measured around the widest part of your dog’s chest, usually just behind the front legs. The measuring tape should sit comfortably around the body without being too tight.
Back length is measured from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. This helps determine how far the sweater will extend along your dog’s back.
Neck circumference is measured around the neck where a collar would naturally sit.
For the most accurate measurements, have your dog stand in a natural, relaxed position. Sitting or tensing the body can change the measurements more than you might expect.
How should a well-fitting dog sweater feel?
The right size should fit comfortably and stay in place without feeling restrictive. Your dog’s front legs should have enough room to move freely, and the sweater should not rub under the legs or feel tight around the chest.
A sweater that is too small can restrict movement and feel uncomfortable. One that is too large may shift, twist or slip out of place as your dog moves.
A good fit is often easy to recognise: your dog should be able to walk, run and lie down naturally without you having to constantly adjust the sweater.
Don’t choose a size based on breed or weight alone
Your dog’s weight can be a useful starting point, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. Two dogs of the same weight can have very different chest measurements, back lengths and body shapes.
The same applies to breed. Breed-specific size recommendations can provide some guidance, but your own dog’s measurements are always a more reliable starting point.
Once you have measured your dog, compare the measurements with our size guide before ordering. If your dog falls between two sizes, check the measurements for each size and compare them carefully with your dog’s own measurements.
